Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 starts at $139, £119, AU$154, will ship in October

Amazon recently unveiled a face-lift to its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet. The 2014 model replaces last year's version and starts at a paltry $139, £119, or AU$154 for the 8GB version and $159 or £139 for 16GB (only the 8GB version appears to be available in Australia). It's available for preorder now and is set to ship in October.

The Kindle Fire HD 7 features a 1,280x-800-pixel resolution display with 216 pixels per inch --standard fare for a budget tablet -- but its improvements include a brighter screen than the 2013 Fire HD had. Inside you'll find a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 8GB or 16GB of internal storage with no expandable storage option, and single-band Wi-Fi.
A cornucopia of colors to choose from.
In a new move, Amazon is offering the Kindle Fire HD 7 in a variety of colors; both the 6- and 7-inch models come in black, white, magenta, "citron," and cobalt blue.
Like most Kindle Fires before it, the 7-inch tablet houses a loud pair of Dolby Digital Plus Audio powered speakers. The Kindle Fire HD 7 also has a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera that will benefit from the free and unlimited Amazon Cloud Drive storage that's rolling out to all Fire devices.
The Kindle Fire HD 7 boasts subtle design changes in bold colors.
The new slew of Amazon tablets will run Fire OS 4.0 "Sangria," a customized version of Android KitKat4.4; owners of older models will be able to upgrade to the OS as well. Some of the new features of the operating system include a shareable Family Library, multiple user profiles, and the aforementioned free cloud storage for photos.
In addition to the Kindle Fire HD 6 and 7, Amazon also introduced a new high-end Kindle e-reader and an update to the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX. For a more in-depth look at the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7, check back in October when we get our hands on one.
